Case study

Eskimo

The Eskimo app is a mobile app, available for iOS and Android, used as a monitoring and controlling interface for an innovative hardware device.

Eskimo device assists cross-country skiers during the most demanding uphill sections, and the users rely on the app I designed to monitor several metrics, and configure the behavior of the device.

One of the few iterations of the UI/UX design.

Challenge

The main challenge of the design of the Eskimo application has been the fact that the product was meant to be used in outdoor conditions (cold, high luminosity), but still requiring a quick and easy interaction from the user.

In these conditions, the choice of font size, color palette, contrast and positioning of the elements has been particularly challenging. Beside that, it was the first time I designed a product that interacted with a phisycal device, and I had to take into account the latency, and other aspects such as the connectivity management, that this brought.

My role

As a UX designer I took part in various meetings with different stakeholders, to gather domain knowledge and correctly characterize the intended user and operating scenario. Using Figma as a collaboration tool I refined the design in several iterations.

After the design had been signed off, I handed over a Figma mockup, and a prototype, to the team of software engineers responsible of implementing the apps, assisting them when needed to export media assets, and clarify the intended user journey.
